The History Of Lip Fillers

16 June 2021 by Omniya Clinic

Lip fillers are among the most popular cosmetic beauty treatments on the market, helping to promote greater lip volume and revitalising the mouth area. Yet lips fillers weren’t always as accessible as they are today and in the early days they were only reserved for the wealthy.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the history of lip fillers and see how they’ve evolved over time.

A Tool For Facial Deformities

The origins of injectable lip filler can be traced back to the early 19th century, with the first of its kind being made from fat. Only the wealthiest people could afford to use these kinds of treatments and they weren’t done for cosmetic reasons.

Instead, lip filler was used to reconstruct the lips to fix facial atrophy caused by diseases like tuberculosis. Gradually, people saw the beauty potential of lip fillers and different substances started to be used.

One of the most infamous substance examples was a case of liquid paraffin being injected.  It should go without saying this treatment wasn’t successful, though surgeons weren’t deterred and continued to experiment.

A Growing Market

During the 1960s, a breakthrough was reached, and cosmetic doctors started to inject liquid silicone into lips. However, there were concerns about the safety of silicone and the material was given up in favour of bovine collagen.

Although considered a safer option, bovine collagen came with flaws. This included being expensive, waiting weeks to see results and allergy tests needing to be carried out three weeks before treatment.

The next phase of lip augmentation occurred in the 1990s when human collagen became the standard filler product. While much safer than previous materials, human collagen was eventually eclipsed by today’s hyaluronic acid solutions.

Lip Fillers Finally Have Their Moment

It could be argued that lip fillers truly jumped into the mainstream in 2015 when Kylie Jenner admitted her plumped-up lips were the result of injections. This caused demand to skyrocket, and many cosmetic clinics experienced a boom in lip filler procedures.

While Jenner can be credited with contributing to a rise in the popularity of injectable fillers, this was also a period when an increase in botched procedures occurred. When getting lip augmentation treatment, it’s always best to talk to a specialist who’s been trained to inject dermal fillers safely.
