The History Of Mesotherapy

4 August 2021 by Omniya Clinic

Over a lifetime, the skin can be exposed to several conditions, ranging from dryness to wrinkles. When looking at skincare procedures, it’s worth going with a treatment that addresses multiple conditions and an example is mesotherapy.

A versatile procedure, mesotherapy is great for treating dull skin, reducing the impact of wrinkles, limiting hyperpigmentation, eliminating cellulite and more. It features injections of plant extracts, enzymes, vitamins to rejuvenate the body and there’s a fascinating history behind mesotherapy.

In this article, we’ll examine how the procedure has evolved since it was created in the mid 20th century.

Invented By a French Doctor

Doctor Michel Pistor, a French doctor, created mesotherapy in 1952. Pistor came from a medical background, having studied at the Faculty de Medicine de Paris and setting up shop in a country village.

In 1958 the French press coined the mesotherapy term, taking inspiration from two Greek words. ‘Meso’ means middle and therapy comes from ‘therapia.’ Pistor continued to perfect his treatment, founding the French mesotherapy society in 1964 and presenting the technique to the academy of medicine in 1968.

In those early years, mesotherapy was used to treat medical conditions like chronic pain, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. The cocktail of ingredients was usually delivered into the bloodstream and it was also used to treat anxiety and depression.

Becoming A Cosmetic Skincare Treatment

Eventually, French surgeons realised mesotherapy was most effective in treating skin conditions like wrinkles and cellulite. When injected into the skin, the ingredients stimulated the growth of new collagen and elastin. This resulted in brighter, healthier skin.

The discovery also led to a wider number of ingredients being used e.g. hyaluronic acid for promoting skin health.

Today, Doctor Pistor’s contribution to the cosmetic industry is well known and he’s received plenty of recognition for his work. This includes receiving the French equivalent of a knighthood and the creation of a university diploma in mesotherapy. Pistor passed away in 2011 and he will forever be remembered as the father of mesotherapy.
