Does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by using a laser light to target the hair follicle. This energy causes the hair follicle to become damaged, and then destroyed. This prevents the follicle from being able to produce further hairs. The hair follicle will absorb the intense beam of light that is delivered by the laser. Despite this, the tissue surrounding the area will remain unaffected.

The term for this procedure is ‘selective photothermolysis’. It is selective because only the hair is targeted and not the skin. It’s also important to make it clear that laser hair removal and electrolysis aren’t the same. The latter involves an electric current being directed onto each individual hair follicle, which is time consuming and painful. It’s virtually pain-free and it can target a large number of hairs in one go.

If you’re wondering, “how much does hair removal cost?”, hair removal ranges in price depending on the area of the body, see our list of hair removal prices below.

If you’ve never had hair removal before, don’t worry, we also offer a free patch test.

What are the benefits of laser hair removal?

There are many benefits of laser hair removal, the main advantage is that you will benefit from permanent hair removal. However, there are other points to consider too. This includes the following…

No more ingrown hairs

Do you suffer from ingrown hairs? A lot of people do, and this usually occurs because of shaving or waxing. They happen when the hair grows back into the skin. They can be sore and itchy, appearing like little red bumps on the skin. Sometimes they can end up becoming infected, which means treatment with tablets or antibiotic creams is needed. However, you won’t need to worry about this with laser hair removal, as the follicle is killed, which stops new hairs from growing, therefore, preventing ingrown hairs.

Save time

Did you know that 88 per cent of women have spent more than four months of their life removing hair from their bodies? Compare this with the length of time your laser hair removal treatment takes, and you can see a big difference.

Save money

Not only are you going to save a considerable amount of time, but a considerable amount of money too. A lot of people think that laser hair removal is costly, however, when you compare the cost of this treatment with shaving and waxing, you see a big difference. The average cost of shaving for a woman over her lifetime is £7,000, whereas the average cost of waxing is a monumental £17,000. Therefore, while it may cost a little bit more upfront, you are going to save huge amounts of money in the long run.

Improved skin

Not only does it get rid of unwanted hair, but it also improves your skin too. This is because waxing and shaving can irritate the skin. A common complaint of shaving is rashes and dry skin and for those who wax, people often experience red bumps and some people have had boils too. You don’t have to worry about any of this with laser hair removal treatment. After you’ve completed your treatments, your skin will be silky smooth.

Laser hair removal FAQs

Is there anything you should not do after laser hair removal?

After you have had laser hair removal, avoid doing any forms of physical exercise. You also need to avoid the sauna, steam room, and gym. In addition, you should make sure you don’t touch the area that has been treated either.

Do hairs fall out straight away?

For most people, the hair will start to fall out between five and 14 days after they have had the treatment.

Can I have laser hair removal every week?

The aim is to target the hair follicle during the growth cycle, which is why it is a good idea to space out the treatments a little bit. Your practitioner will make recommendations regarding this.

Will six laser hair removal treatments be enough?

In most cases, between six and eight treatments are going to be enough. However, everyone is different, which is why you need to consult an expert for a timeline.

How often should you have laser hair removal treatments on your face?

For facial hair, treatment is usually carried out every four to six weeks.

Should I shave before my laser hair removal?

It is advisable to shave before your laser hair removal treatment. This is because the laser needs to target the follicle of the hair, and so shaving assists with this. Not only is freshly shaved skin best in terms of the effectiveness of treatment, but the laser could also burn your skin if your hair is too long. This is why you don’t want hair above the skin, but you do want it in the follicle. Because of this, waxing is not recommended.

Are there any side effects for laser hair removal?

Most people do not experience any side effects as a consequence of laser hair removal. Nevertheless, all treatments do have some side effects, and so it is important to be aware of them. Most side effects are temporary and minor. Anyone who experiences lasting side effects should speak with their practitioner as soon as possible. Below are some of the side-effects that could arise:

A risk of skin infection
As is the case with all forms of cosmetic hair removal, there is the risk of an infection if you use a laser to damage hair follicles. The impacted area needs to be treated while the wound is healing. If you notice any signs of infection, give us a call and we will help. If an infection does arise, do not apply over-the-counter antibiotic creams to large areas of the skin. Instead, one of our practitioners will be able to recommend the right course of treatment should an infection arise, although this is very rare.

Changes in skin colour
Some people may notice small changes to the colour of their skin. It could get a little bit lighter or darker after their treatment. People with darker skin tones are more likely to experience lighter pigmentation changes, whereas those with lighter skin are more likely to experience darker pigmentation changes. The skin will return to normal over time.

Crusting
Some people may also experience skin crusting in the area that has been impacted. This can be inconvenient but it is a minor issue. It can sometimes cause scabbing. However, by using a moisturiser and taking care of the treated area, you can prevent any lasting problems in this regard.

Irritation and redness
Some people can experience a little bit of irritation and redness in the areas that have been impacted. The skin may feel tender or tingle. In some cases, it may appear to swell a little bit. The symptoms are typically short-lived. However, if they do persist, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.
