OVERVIEW OF ACNE

Acne is a very common inflammatory skin condition which occurs when hair follicles become plugged with dead skin cells and oil. Typically, acne can be found on the face, forehead, back, shoulders and chest.

Whilst acne is most common amongst teenagers, usually starting at puberty, it can affect people of all ages for varying reasons.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES ACNE?

The oil producing (sebaceous) glands can be particularly sensitive to blood levels of certain hormones, present in male and females. These can cause glands to produce excess oil. If the dead skin cells, which line the pores, do not shed properly, they can clog up the follicles, producing blackheads and whiteheads.

The main causes are:

  • Hair follicles, clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria
  • Hormone related
  • Excess of oil production

These causes can be further exacerbated due to hormones, medication, diet and stress.

As well as being an embarrassing problem, acne can also be difficult to treat; with many over the counter solutions being far too aggressive, or not advanced enough.

SYMPTOMS OF ACNE

There are varying symptoms and signs of acne, depending on the condition’s severity. These can include:

  • Whiteheads (which are closed plugged pores)
  • Blackheads (which are open plugged pores)
  • Small, tender red bumps (papules)
  • Pimples, which are papules with pus at the tips
  • Nodules, which are painful solid lumps under the skin surface
  • Cystic Lesions, which are lumps beneath the skin surface filled with pus.

IS ACNE HEREDITARY?

Whilst acne can run in families, in most cases it occurs for unknown, sporadic reasons.

HOW IS ACNE DIAGNOSED?

Acne is recognised quite easily, by the appearance of spots, and the manner in which they are distributed on the body – primarily, the face, neck, chest and back.

As there are a number of different varieties of acne, it is important that you speak with an expert. At Omniya Clinic, we pride ourselves on working with leading aestheticians and dermatologists to ensure your concerns are diagnosed and treated effectively.

CAN ACNE BE CURED?

Whilst there is no cure for acne, there are a variety of treatments available at Omniya Clinic to prevent the formation of new spots, to reduce the spots, and to help clear scarring.

One of our experts will be happy to help you to control your acne, avoid scarring or damage to the skin and make the scarring less noticeable.
