What is Botox®?

Botox, botulinum toxin, is a prescription product, primarily noted for its anti-ageing abilities, it is used to reduce and treat facial lines, frown lines and other wrinkles. Botox is made up of a toxin called botulinum toxin A, which is used to temporarily prevent muscles from moving. It blocks some chemical signals from the nerves, primarily those signals that cause muscle contraction. Numerous products are now also available, such as Bocouture, with each being a little different, particularly regarding the dosage. At Omniya Clinic, in London, we only use industry-leading products from Allergan and Merz for our Botox London treatments.

At Omniya Clinic we use botox injections for different concerns, but primarily to help reduce and treat frown lines and wrinkles. There are a number of products now available, at Omniya Clinic in London, we only use industry-leading products from Allergan and Merz for Botox.

What can Botox® treat?

The positive effects of Botox, botulinum toxin, are not limited to the two examples we’ve listed above. The most common use for Botox is to temporarily relax muscles – the ones that cause lines and wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. There are many uses for Botox injections, and at Omniya, we offer a range of anti-wrinkle treatments, listed below, but not limited to:

Forehead Botox: The forehead is one of the most common treatment areas, which frequently wrinkles the muscles we use when expressing emotions.

Glabella: The glabella is the fancy name given to the space between your brows. Over time, a deep and prominent line may appear. We can relax the muscle to reduce the overworking of the area. Brow Botox wrinkle injections can be used to lift the brow area by administration of Botox in key areas, which relaxes the muscles used when you frown and lifts the weight that we naturally push down.

Botox for the nose: Yes, this might be an unfamiliar one to you. When you smile repeatedly over time (and we hope that you do), creases form on the bridge of the nose near the tear duct of the eye. We can relax the muscles in this region of your face to reduce how prominent these lines can appear.

Jawline Botox: A slimmer, heart-shaped jaw can be created with jawline Botox, streamlining the area. It is also effective in treating bruxism – which is defined as excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching.

More information about Botox

How does Botox work?

In order for a muscle to move, a neurotransmitter needs to signal that muscle to move, and a nerve will release this signal therefore Botox, botulinum toxin, relaxes your muscles to flatten out wrinkles.

Botox inhibits the muscle from moving by depleting that neurotransmitter.

Preventing your muscles from moving reduces the wrinkles created by certain facial expressions.

What you need to know about Botox

It is important to understand what Botox injections are.

Botox is a naturally forming bacteria produced by clostridium botulinum used by our trained professionals to treat a range of medical ailments, from excessive sweating to the removal of wrinkles.

For more information about our Botox treatment procedures, take a look at our blog.

How much Botox do you need?

What defines the amount of Botox required is the strength of the muscle around the area that needs treating.

As Botox only temporarily relaxes your muscles, we recommend booking treatments periodically as Botox results last for around three months.

Botox FAQs

Am I suitable for Botox?

Your medical history will be discussed during your initial consultation, where before and after photographs will be taken. Your practitioner will assess and discuss which areas are most appropriate to treat with Botox, with your treatment explained in depth at the consultation. Following this, your Botox treatment will proceed with your consent, once we are confident we can meet your expectations.

Please notify your practitioner if you have medical conditions that can affect safety, such as damaged nerves or muscle complaints. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please let your practitioner know. Whilst there are no clinical studies to determine whether this may cause harm, we have a policy not to treat pregnant clients, or those who are breastfeeding.

How is Botox administered at Omniya Clinic?

First and foremost, for your safety, Botox treatments must be performed by a qualified practitioner. We use needles to inject the wrinkle injection preparation into a particular muscle; as a result, there may be a slight discomfort, but not always. The outcome will be a reduction in your lines and wrinkles.

Does Botox hurt?

Most patients tolerate the pain of Botox well.

The injection site may cause a slight sensation as the needle penetrates the skin, and this is expected to be minor. Although this ought to stop after the treatment, you may experience a slight sensation for up to 24 hours after the treatment. No local anaesthesia is required, as the pain is minimal.

We use super fine needles to minimise any discomfort you may experience during your Botox treatment.

Is there any downtime after my wrinkle injections treatment?

The treated area may show signs of bruising. This should subside after a few days, but we encourage you to contact us if you experience symptoms and require further assistance. For many clients, we provide arnica cream and tablets to reduce the impact. Some patients feel headaches or flu-like symptoms after the first treatment, or a heavy feeling in the shoulders 1-2 days after the treatment.

Is Botox a safe treatment?

Non-invasive such as Botox procedures carry a small amount of risk, which is why we only administer them after a face to face consultation where you will discuss detailed cautions and contradictions. However, by nature, it is a safe procedure and a leading option to combat wrinkles, approved by the FDA.

However, generally speaking, it has a very good safety profile, having been used for numerous years to great effect.

As an unregulated industry in the UK, it is imperative that you choose the right practice and doctor. A large number of practices are offering cosmetic treatments at low prices, and we encourage you to think twice before opting for a practice with a negligible reputation. Your doctor and the products they administer are crucial when making your decision.

At Omniya Clinic London, we believe that less is more and always take care to ensure that our patients look natural rather than evident. We are proud that our reputation holds us in good stead.

What are the risks and potential side effects of anti wrinkle injections?

Botox is a relatively safe treatment, when performed by an experienced doctor. However, with all treatments, there are possible side effects and complications. These can include:

  • Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site. These may last for a few days.
  • Bruising is the process as healthy bloodstream works to instantly treat the broken skin tissue and live wound.
  • Headache or flu symptoms.
  • Droopy eyelid.
  • Crooked smile.
  • Eye dryness or conversely excessive tearing.

Although unlikely if performed by a thoroughly trained doctor, there are other more serious associated risks.

During your consultation, your clinician will advise you of all associated risks.

It is always safer to report sensations to your doctor whenever you experience them.

What is Botox?

The true name for the protein used in any type of anti-wrinkle treatment is botulinum toxin, and it has propelled itself to the heights of the cosmetic industry; becoming the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world.

It is a neurotoxic protein, used to treat muscle spasms, excessive sweating and migraines. In 1989 an American surgeon used it to correct forehead asymmetry and the rest is, as they say history.

Nowadays, this leading treatment, prescribed to reduce wrinkles and lines. It has the effect of blocking nerves, prohibiting the skin from creasing and wrinkling. The process has the effect of undoing folds and lines that are present from showing.

Who will perform my Botox treatment?

At Omniya Clinic, we only work with medically trained, experienced and skilled medical practitioners who will perform your Botox treatment.

What age can you get Botox?

Commonly, it is administered from ages 25 and upwards. As well as being anti ageing and anti wrinkle injection treatment, Botox is also used for preventative measures – to prevent the appearance of ageing and wrinkles in the first place.

It is arguably the most effective wrinkle treatment on the market, and therefore in high demand. As a principle, at Omniya London, we treat the concerns a patient has, and patients are assessed individually based on their suitability.

The following are examples of when you may be ready for Botox. If you:

  • Start to notice deep-set lines and wrinkles.
  • See deep lines and wrinkles when you make facial expressions.
  • Wish to improve facial symmetry.
  • Want to reduce the appearance of a ‘gummy smile’.
  • Would like to soften or shrink your jawline.
  • Excessively sweat.
  • Have a GP who recommends the treatment.

The following are examples of when you may not be ready for Botox. If you have:

  • A heavy brow.
  • Super-aged skin.
  • Unrealistic expectations.
  • To use expression to perform your profession.
  • An underlying muscle disorder.
  • Early signs of pregnancy, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Botox has the word toxin and toxic in it - should I be worried?

Most medication in extremely high doses is rarely good, but the amount of toxin we use in anti-wrinkle treatments is very small and is only used to treat the targeted muscle. Botox does this by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle which in turn relaxes the muscle.

How long before an important event should I Botox?

Typically, it takes a few days to see results for Botox.

However, it can take up to two weeks for the final results of anti-wrinkle injections. The best thing to do is book your Botox appointment two weeks before the important event and we’ll do our best to make you look your best. We also need to make sure you’re completely satisfied with your results and offer a complimentary review.

How will I look after Botox?

Your skin may be red immediately after Botox treatment, but this should settle within the hour. You can expect full results after approximately 7 days. We ask our clients to attend a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after the treatment to ensure the best Botox results can been achieved.

Will Botox freeze my face?

Not at all. The expert team at Omniya Clinic are internationally regarded as leading clinicians.

What is the after care for Botox?

Some general after-care instructions for Botox include the following, but note that your clinician will provide you with aftercare following your specific treatment:

  • Not to lie down, massage or rub the area for approximately 4 hours after treatment.
  • Gently exercise the treated muscles, for example, frown and smile as frequently as possible.
  • Avoid/limit aspirin and alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatment.
  • You may take paracetamol if you experience a headache, which is not uncommon.
  • Side effects are typically temporary and mild, but please inform us if you are concerned.
