What types of skincare your skin type needs

9 December 2018 by Omniya Clinic

Have you ever wondered what your skin type means for your face products and skincare routine? Using the right products and treatments is essential to your skin’s continued good health and appearance, but a lot of people don’t give it much thought. The slightest changes in climate, humidity, and air composition have the potential to make changes deep within our skin and change a healthy appearance to one of inflammation and irritation. What does your skin type mean for your skin, and how do we look after it properly?

Normal Skin Type

Possibly one of the most ambiguous skin types, the ‘normal’ skin type category doesn’t fall into one or the other ends of the ‘oily’ or ‘dry’ spectrum. When a normal skin type does seem to commit to one of these ends, it tends to be short-lived and driven by some other stimuli such as hormones or the environment. The normal skin type is unproblematic day to day, but in order to maintain this balance it needs a skincare routine to help it. Gentle cleansers, moisturisers, and sun protection are a normal skin type’s best friend, but a bit of added refreshment and glow in the form of exfoliation wouldn’t go amiss either.

Oily Skin Type

An oily skin type can come about through genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, or naturally and constant high levels of hormones. Because the root of oily skin lies in hormones, its severity can fluctuate from week to week and month to month. When genetically predisposed to oily skin; active oil glands in the skin produce a higher amount of sebum that seeps through our pores and follicles. Hormonal changes, on the other hand, change your sebum secretion and heighten it to expand the pores and block them; stretching the skin and causing blackheads. Skincare products that are high in alcohol may claim to tame your oil production, but actually they could have the opposite effect and strip your natural oils away, prompting the body to over-produce and replace them. Professional skin cleansers, professional treatments such as chemical peels, and light moisturisers are much more effective when trying to sensibly control oil production. Visit Omniya Clinic's Aestheticians to find out about oil management for your skin – a personalised treatment plan will always provide better results than off-the-shelf products.

Dry Skin Type

Dry skin types often feel tight, flaky, or scaly and topical products like cleansers and makeup can make this worse. Due to lack of natural oil production, you might have smaller pores that aren’t too visible. However, you are more prone to developing premature wrinkles and regular skin irritation. Naturally dry skin types have nothing to do with the water levels or dehydration in your system; but in fact concern themselves with your oil glands. The sebum responsible for keeping your skin dewy and fresh isn’t as readily produced in dry skin. This means cream moisturisers will be your best friends because of their rich concentration of oils and thickness. This oil is readily absorbed by your skin to hydrate the superficial layer and sometimes much deeper, depending on the quality of the product. Dry skin types should avoid harsh skincare products that have a high concentration of alcohol in them. This is because these will just dry the skin out further and rob what little facial oils you have. Instead, opt for a light daily cleanser.

Your skin is the largest organ on your body; so it’s no wonder that it can be prone to such changes and need some extra TLC.
