What Is Fat Freezing (Cryolipolysis)?
At Omniya Clinic in London
Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical treatment, providing a great alternative to liposuction. The process involves fat cells being frozen to reduce them. Cryogenic studies have shown that fat cells freeze a lot quicker than skin cells do. Therefore, the treatment uses a temperature that will kill fat cells without harming the skin cells around them.
The treatment can be carried out on many parts of the body where it has become difficult to shift fat, despite exercise and diet. This includes arms, back, stomach, chin, and thighs. The fat cells that are frozen will die off. The treatment uses the natural fat removal system within your body to achieve this. The result is a body that looks more toned and sculpted, with no downtime and no scarring.

Is Fat Freezing Right For Me?
The ideal candidate for fat freezing treatment is something with a BMI of 30 or below, who has areas of stubborn fat that do not respond to exercise and diet. If your BMI is higher than 30, don’t rule yourself out of this treatment. We have helped a number of patients with BMIs over 30.
However, it is important to understand that you are probably going to need to have a number of treatments on the same area in order to get the results you desire. Fat freezing is not a substitute for a healthy diet and frequent exercise. Should you wish, we can help to put together a nutrition and weight loss management programme for you as well.
Preparing For Your Appointment
As mentioned, consultation is an extremely important part of the process. We will speak with you, assess the treatment area, provide our recommendations, and answer any queries you may have.
If you decide to move forward with fat freezing, we recommend you wear comfortable, loose clothing on the day It is also a good idea to eat a small snack beforehand to ensure you don’t have any nausea from this treatment.
We also recommend that you avoid caffeine for two hours before and after the fat freezing treatment and stay away from alcohol for 24 hours before the treatment.
How Many Fat Freezing Sessions Are You Going To Need?
Fat freezing can be completed anywhere, yet you may need more than one session. There are a number of different factors that are going to determine how many treatments you need. This includes the amount of fat, the size of the treatment area, and a number of other factors.
This is why we always start off our treatments with a consultation. This enables us to assess the area and make our recommendations regarding how many treatments we think you will need. On average, we find that most of our patients require between two and three treatment sessions per target area.
Treatment Expectations
Don’t be disappointed when you don’t see results straight away. Your body is going to be processing the fat and eliminating the dead cells in the weeks after your treatment. You will find that your body transforms for a few months after you have had the fat freezing procedure.
In terms of recovery, there is no downtime. This is a non-invasive procedure, which means you can go back to work or continue your weekly yoga sessions. Fat freezing doesn’t have to hold you back, and no one needs to know anything about it.
While you can go back to your normal life quickly, there are also a number of things that you can do to make yourself more comfortable. This includes wearing comfortable clothing. You may even want to consider compression clothing.
Fat Freezing Aftercare
Once you have had your treatment, there are a number of steps you can take to ensure the best results. This includes the following:
- Be active
- Try to reduce your alcohol intake
- Try to only drink two cups of caffeine per day
- Drink at least 2.5 litres of water every day
- Eat a healthy diet
- Maintain your weight
Exercise and nutrition is beneficial on all levels when it comes to weight management and your overall health. Whether you’re a fan of Zumba or you love hitting the treadmill at the gym, keep that physical activity up. Any weight gain, especially within the first two months of your treatment, could have a negative impact on the results.
Possible Side Effects
As mentioned, fat freezing is a safe procedure. However, as is the case with any treatment, it is possible to experience mild side effects. This includes the following:
- Tingling sensations
- Feelings of fullness
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Redness
- Pain
- Minor pressure
- Numbness
- Cold
The side effects that have been mentioned may get a little bit worse in the first few days after your treatment. However, they should then subside. The reason for these side effects is because your body is still going to be shrinking the fat cells long after the procedure has finished.
